The Frith Prescribing Guidelines, For Adults with Intellectual Disabilities

Edited by Sabyasachi Bhaumik and David Branford
ISBN: 0-9555758-2-6

Price: £24.99

People with intellectual disability (ID) have significant developmental intellectual impairment (IQ < 70) and deficits in adaptive functioning, included in this group are people with Down syndrome and many of those with autism spectrum disorders and cerebral palsy. People with ID have high levels of physical and psychiatric health problems. About 40% of adults with ID have a major psychiatric or behaviour problem and 25% have active epilepsy. In this population, the diagnostic and treatment process may need a different approach from that used in the general population, in particular it is essential to take account of the impact of communication difficulties.

These guidelines were conceived by clinicians working in intellectual disability services and developed within the Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust. They are based on both evidence and expert opinion to provide a consensus approach to prescribing as part of a holistic package of care.

The second edition of this practical handbook, in addition to providing numerous tables and treatment algorithms, provides new chapters on areas relevant to ID. It will be an invaluable resource for psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses and general practitioners who treat adults with ID.

New chapters include: sleep disorders, menstrual cycle-related problems, sexual disorders and alcohol use disorders.

Revised chapters include: aggression, autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, personality disorders, epilepsy, dementia and ageing.

The second edition of the popular Frith Prescribing Guidelines for Adults with Intellectual Disability brings a timely update on the pharmacological treatment of psychiatric disorders in adults with intellectual disabilities.

This edition is meant for a wider readership, including primary care doctors and other allied healthcare professionals, particularly the growing number of nurse prescribers.
